Why Dubai?
Dubai is one of the world's fastest-growing tourism destinations, and one of its most misunderstood. It's not just skyscrapers and shopping malls. The city has a genuinely fascinating old town, extraordinary dining at every price point, and a desert landscape on its doorstep that offers one of the most memorable experiences in the region.
Dubai also rewards planning more than almost any other city. The attractions are spread across a vast, car-dependent urban sprawl. Without a logical sequence, you'll spend half your trip in taxis. This guide groups stops geographically so each day flows naturally.
Dubai at a Glance
3-Day Dubai Itinerary
Heritage, Souks & the Dhow Wharf
- Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Dubai's preserved old quarter: wind-tower architecture, narrow lanes, and excellent small museums. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
- Dubai Museum, Inside Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in Dubai (1787). A surprisingly good overview of the city's transformation. Allow 45 minutes.
- Dubai Creek Abra, Cross the creek by traditional wooden boat (AED 1). One of the best experiences in Dubai and the cheapest.
- Gold Souk & Spice Souk, The Gold Souk has over 380 retailers and the largest display of gold jewellery in the world. The adjacent Spice Souk is a sensory highlight.
- Dinner at Deira, The real Dubai. Cheap, excellent South Asian and Levantine restaurants in the streets behind the souks.
The World's Tallest Building & the Dubai Mall
- Burj Khalifa, At the Top, Book the level 124 or 148 observation deck online. Sunrise and sunset slots sell out weeks ahead. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
- Dubai Fountain Show, The world's largest choreographed fountain, at the base of Burj Khalifa. Free. Shows at 6 pm and every 30 minutes until 11 pm. Watch from the boardwalk.
- Dubai Mall, Not just shopping: the Dubai Aquarium, an ice rink, a virtual reality park, and a dinosaur skeleton. The aquarium tunnel alone (AED 80) is worth 45 minutes.
- Dubai Frame, A 150-metre picture frame on the border between old and new Dubai. The glass floor walkway is excellent. A fascinating architectural statement.
The Arabian Desert & the Iconic Palm
- Morning: Desert Safari (half-day), Dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, and a Bedouin camp dinner. Book through your hotel or a reputable operator. The evening safari (4–9 pm) is more dramatic with sunset over the dunes.
- Palm Jumeirah, The Boardwalk, Walk the Palm's outer crescent boardwalk for views of the Burj Al Arab and the Dubai skyline. Free access.
- Atlantis Aquaventure or Burj Al Arab Lobby, Atlantis waterpark for a full afternoon, or treat yourself to afternoon tea at the 7-star Burj Al Arab (booking required, AED 450–600 pp).
5-Day Dubai Itinerary
Modern Dubai's Waterfront
- Dubai Marina Walk, A 7 km waterfront promenade lined with cafés, restaurants, and the impressive skyscraper skyline of the Marina. Morning walk at its best.
- Ain Dubai (Dubai Eye), The world's largest observation wheel, 250 metres high. Standard cabin tickets or private dining cabins available.
- JBR, The Beach, Dubai's most popular free public beach. Sunset here with the Marina skyline behind you is genuinely spectacular.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque & Louvre Abu Dhabi
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, One of the world's most beautiful mosques. Free entry; dress code strictly enforced (abaya rental available). Allow 1.5–2 hours. Photography is outstanding.
- Louvre Abu Dhabi, A Jean Nouvel-designed masterpiece. World-class universal art museum with works from every civilisation. 30-minute drive from the mosque.
- Corniche Beach, Abu Dhabi's beautiful beachfront promenade. A very different energy from Dubai, quieter and more local.
Dubai Travel Tips
- The Dubai Metro covers most tourist areas cheaply. Get a NOL card (AED 25 including AED 19 credit).
- Dress modestly in souks, malls, and public spaces. Beach dress stays at the beach.
- Dubai is a Muslim country, respect local customs and dress modestly, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
- Book Burj Khalifa, desert safari, and Atlantis well in advance, especially during peak season (Dec–Jan).
- The heat from May–September is extreme (40°C+). All tourist activities happen indoors or at night during summer.
- Taxis are metered and cheap by Western standards. From the airport, use the official RTA taxi rank.
- Friday and Saturday are the UAE weekend. Some sites have different opening hours.
