Why Rome?
Rome is extraordinary but overwhelming. The density of history, 2,000-year-old ruins beside Baroque fountains beside Renaissance churches, means that without a plan, you spend your days wandering between unmissable things without really seeing any of them. The solution is to work by neighbourhood: the ancient centre, Vatican City, Trastevere, and the Baroque Rome of Bernini and Caravaggio are all distinct areas that reward a focused half-day each.
This guide gives you geographically tight itineraries for 3 and 5 days, designed so you walk between stops rather than battling Rome's traffic.

5-Day Rome Itinerary
Art, Gardens & the Tridente
- Borghese Gallery, Rome's finest art museum and one of the best in the world, Bernini sculptures, Caravaggio paintings. Entry is strictly by 2-hour timed slot; book weeks in advance.
- Villa Borghese Gardens, Beautiful landscaped park surrounding the gallery. Rent a rowboat on the lake, visit the viewpoint over the city.
- Spanish Steps & Trinità dei Monti, 135 steps. Lively at all hours. Walk down Via Condotti for window shopping in Rome's luxury district.
Roman Ruins Beyond the City
- Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient port city, 30 minutes by train. Better preserved than Pompeii in many ways and a fraction of the crowds. A full morning to explore.
- Tivoli, Villa d'Este & Hadrian's Villa, 1 hour by bus. Two UNESCO sites in one day: the extraordinary terraced Renaissance garden of Villa d'Este with 500 fountains, and Hadrian's sprawling imperial retreat.
Rome Travel Tips
- Book the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Borghese Gallery online weeks in advance, these are the non-negotiables.
- Dress code is strict at churches, the Vatican, and basilicas, covered shoulders and knees required. Carry a scarf.
- Tap water from Rome's nasoni (little nose) street fountains is safe, cold, and delicious.
- Avoid tourist restaurants on major piazzas, walk two blocks away for the same food at half the price.
- The Metro has only 2 lines in Rome's centre; most sightseeing is better done on foot.
- Restaurants don't open for dinner until 7:30–8 pm. Arriving at 6 pm means sitting alone in an empty room.
- A coperto (cover charge) of €1–3 per person is standard at sit-down restaurants, it's not a scam.
